Dear Parents/Carers,
With the increasing popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters, it’s important to be aware of the current regulations and safety guidelines surrounding them. Please review the key information listed below along with the e-bike and e-scooter fact sheets.
E-Bike and E-Scooter Guidelines for Families
E-Bikes:
Types Allowed in NSW:
- Electrically Power-Assisted Bicycles: Max power 500 watts, reduces power as speed increases, and cuts off at 25 km/h.
- Power-Assisted Pedal Cycles: Max motor power 200 watts, cannot run solely on motor, must weigh under 50 kg, and have an adjustable seat.
Restrictions:
- E-bikes not meeting these specs are illegal on roads and related areas.
- Petrol-powered bikes are banned on all public roads and areas.
Safety Tips:
- Kids must wear helmets.
- Under 10s should ride in fenced areas; 10-12-year-olds should avoid busy roads.
- Riders under 16 can use footpaths and should wear bright clothing.
E-Scooters:
Private E-Scooters:
- Illegal on roads and public paths; can ONLY be used on private property.
